Get Involved with Scientists in School

Scientists in School (SiS) is a dynamic charitable organization (867139537RR0001) dedicated to establishing a strong foundation of science and innovation among Canadian youth. Our success depends on the involvement of people like you who share our passion for science literacy. Please read on and navigate the links to the left to see how you can help SiS "spark" a passion for science and innovation in tomorrow's leaders.

WAYS TO GIVE

Your donation to Scientists in School is an investment in our children's future and will help to ensure that tomorrow's scientists and innovators are "sparked" by science today. There are many ways to give:

Single Gifts

Every gift to SiS helps children experience the wonder of science.

To donate securely online, please click on the icon. You will automatically receive an electronic tax receipt through CanadaHelps.

If you prefer to donate by mail, please print and complete our donor form (pdf) and send it, along with your cheque payable to Scientists in School, to:

Tax receipts will be issued for donations of $10 or more, unless otherwise requested.

Monthly Gifts

A monthly gift allows you to support SiS on an ongoing basis without having to worry about whether your donation is up-to-date. Monthly gifts also help provide SiS with a steady, reliable source of funds to aid in planning and enable SiS to keep costs down, which means more of your donation supports our programs.

Currently, SiS can only accept monthly gifts securely online through CanadaHelps. To do so, please click on the icon. You will automatically receive an electronic tax receipt through CanadaHelps.

Tribute and In-Memoriam Gifts

A donation to SiS is a special way to celebrate a milestone, such as a birthday, wedding or graduation; to say thank you to someone special; or to honour someone in a meaningful way. It is also a way to commemorate the life of a dear friend or family member while making an investment in Canada's next generation.

When you make a tribute gift to SiS, we will send a personalized card to your honouree or the next-of-kin to acknowledge your thoughtfulness.

Tribute gifts may be made securely online through CanadaHelps by clicking the icon above or by mailing a cheque, along with acknowledgment instructions, to SiS at the above-noted address.

Donations of Publicly-Traded Securities

You may wish to consider donating shares of publicly-traded securities or mutual funds directly to Scientists in School. Assuming your shares have increased in value, 50% of the capital gain is taxable as income. However, thanks to changes announced in the 2006 federal budget, this capital gains tax does not apply when you donate these appreciated securities directly to a charity. The following table illustrates the advantage of donating the stock versus selling the shares and donating the cash proceeds:

Currently SiS processes gifts of securities securely through CanadaHelps. Visit the CanadaHelps website for more information about donating securities through CanadaHelps. Making such a gift is easy. All you have to do is follow the online instructions in order to have the shares electronically transferred from your account to CanadaHelps' account. CanadaHelps then sells the shares and donates the proceeds (less a 3% transaction fee) to SiS. The receipt value is for the closing trading price on the day that the shares are received by CanadaHelps.

Corporate Partnerships

Scientists in School is fortunate to have strong partnerships with a wide range of Canadian corporations. Corporate partnerships enable SiS to offer subsidized programming, to bring our workshops to less-privileged schools, to update and acquire new materials and equipment and to expand our programs to new regions and new audiences. They also provide SiS with in-kind products used to deliver our program. SiS is proud of its corporate supporters and pleased to acknowledge their contributions publicly.

Please note that not all corporate giving qualifies for charitable tax receipts. We are happy to work with you to determine if your gift qualifies.

Workplace Giving

Many companies offer programs to match donations made by their employees to eligible charities. If you would like to double your gift, contact the Personnel or Public Relations department where you work to determine if your gift to Scientists in School is able to be matched or to have SiS added to your company's list of eligible recipients. They can also provide you with appropriate paperwork. If your company does not currently offer a matching gift program, please ask to have one established! We would be pleased to help by providing you with information about SiS.
