The Ottawa Region of Scientists in School was founded in 2005 and we've been working every year since to build the program and reach more classrooms, students, and teachers. During the 2010/11 school year, we delivered over 1,400 hands-on classroom workshops to schools in Ottawa and area, reaching more than 38,000 student scientists and engaging 3,600 parent volunteers. Our dynamic presenter team, comprised of 25 highly trained science and education professionals who love kids and are passionate about science, bring their area of science or engineering to life for young learners. We currently offer 38 workshops for Kindergarten to Grade 8 classrooms. Above all, we are dedicated to providing you with exceptional science experiences and excellent customer service. Please feel free to contact us at anytime - we love hearing from you!

WE INSPIRE EXCITEMENT FOR SCIENCE

DID YOU KNOW ...
that goalie masks, sequencing the genome for Alzheimers disease, IMAX Movie Systems, zippers, the Blackberry, discovery of the gene for Cystic Fibrosis, roller skates, Marquis Wheat, light bulbs, creating the first physical map of the human genome and an electric hand prosthesis for children all share one thing in common?

They are amongst the many discoveries and inventions brought to the world by Canadians. Science in Canada is cool eh?

"I am always amazed at the engagement of students. It certainly supports the move towards play based learning for our young students. These are the best field trips ever and I hear the same comment from our volunteers."

- C. Westbrook, Teacher, Severn E.S., Ottawa-Carlton District School Board

DID YOU KNOW ...
owls have not one but two stomachs!

Owls swallow their prey whole and only the soft parts are digested passing into the second stomach. The bones and fur are regurgitated after being packed into a pellet in the first stomach. Grades 4 to 7 ecologists can discover what owls eat for their dinner first-hand using sterilized owl pellets. They will identify various skull types and assemble rodent skeletons in SiS's Adventures in the Bone Zone workshop.

"The 'Scientists in School' programs are the best thing I've discovered since becoming a teacher. If you're looking for engaging and fun science activities for your students, then this is the organization for you. I've had a couple of different workshops and both my students and I have enjoyed every minute. Book one, it's worth it!"

- A. Wiegelmann, Grade 2 EFI, Stittsville Public School, Ottawa-Carleton District School Board

DID YOU KNOW ...
The ears of a cricket are located on the front legs, just below the knee.

"I was left hanging on what other galaxies, universes, and planets are still out there. When I grow up, I think I want to work for NASA or become an astronomer."
